Wow. The Windows Live Messenger team just posted on their blog about the progress of the iâ€™m initiative in its first year in the US and, Iâ€™ve got to say, the widespread support for this program has been really amazing. In case you arenâ€™t already familiar with it, the iâ€™m initiative uses Messenger to help you support some great social causes. Once you sign up for the i'm initiative, every time you participate in an "iâ€™m" conversation using Messenger, Microsoft shares a portion of the programâ€™s advertising revenue with one of ten social cause organizations of your choice.

Actually, I probably donâ€™t need to tell a lot of you thatâ€¦ so many of you have already joined the program and are i'm-ing away. Thanks to your overwhelming participation, Microsoft has already been able to donate a total of $1.3 million to ten of the worldâ€™s most effective organizations dedicated to social causes â€“ and thatâ€™s just the beginning.Â

Some of you responded to our post last week about the INSPI(RED) team that youâ€™re also interested in social causes that can have an impact within the US.Â Regardless of whether your interests are local or global, you should really check out the iâ€™m initiative, as there is a wide array of causes involved.Â

I've been taking part in the iâ€™m initiative for awhile now already, and clearly you have too. Q & A about Windows Live Hotmail

A few days ago, we told you about how Windows Live Hotmail was created. Today, weâ€™ll respond to some of the top issues weâ€™ve heard about from our customers.

1. Why did you move me from MSN to Windows Live Hotmail when nothing was wrong?

Unfortunately, MSN Hotmail did not allow us to address significant customer needs, such as support for certain languages and accessibility for folks with different visual and motor disabilities. We also got complaints from many customers about MSN Hotmail being too hard to use. We spent a long time building a new version of Hotmail that the majority of our customers like better, and we want to focus our engineering teamâ€™s efforts on the new system. It is a bit of a change, but Windows Live Hotmail has a lot of the same functionality as MSN Hotmail. Before we started working on Windows Live Hotmail, we used to update MSN Hotmail a lot, so it would change, too. If you liked MSN Hotmail, you may prefer the classic version of Windows Live Hotmail. Make sure youâ€™re using it by going to Options (or Options --> More options from the full version). Look at the first option on the page to see if youâ€™re currently using the full or classic version.

2. Windows Live Hotmail pages take too long to load. Can you fix this?

Thanks for reporting this, and this is a high priority for us to fix. If you have a slower Internet connection, you may do better by switching to the classic version of Windows Live Hotmail, which loads about as fast as MSNÂ Hotmail did. The full version is fast once itâ€™s fully loaded, but you do have to download a good chunk of JavaScript at the beginning, and this may be tough for folks who have slow Internet connections or live far from our data centers. Make sure youâ€™re using the classic version by going to Options (or Options --> More options from the full version). Look at the first option on the page to see if youâ€™re in the full or classic version.

3. When I donâ€™t use Internet Explorer, Windows Live Hotmail doesnâ€™t work very well, especially in Safari.

We added support for browsers other than Internet Explorer (IE) in 2005, and the non-IE browser we support best is Firefox 1.5+. Itâ€™s available for practically every operating system out there, so if you canâ€™t use IE or donâ€™t like it, try Firefox because it works well with a wide range of websites. We currently do not support the full version for Safari due to technical limitations, though we continue to monitor the issue. Safari users can use the classic version of Hotmail for now, and we are monitoring whether future versions of Safari will support all of our technical needs.

As far as I know, there are only four features that IE supports but Firefox doesnâ€™t. Firefox users get Firefoxâ€™s built-in spell check while IE users get a spell check that stores its dictionary on Hotmailâ€™s servers. Firefox users canâ€™t resize the columns in the full version. The special photo upload tool is an ActiveX control and works only in IE, but non-IE users can attach photos just like any other file. Only IE users can see their friendsâ€™ Messenger presence.

4. I don't want an e-mail program that looks like Outlook; the interface of the new Hotmail is too complicated.

The classic version of Windows Live Hotmail looks and acts very similar to MSN Hotmail. If you preferred that simpler interface, make sure youâ€™re using the classic version by going to Options (or Options --> More options from the full version). Look at the first option on the page to see if youâ€™re in the full or classic version.

5. Why can I do some things in the full version of Hotmail that I can't do in the classic version?

The full version uses AJAX, which is a more advanced technology that provides you with a lot of rich and snappy interactions, such as loading the next message in your inbox without reloading the whole page. Some features, such as the reading pane, wouldnâ€™t work well if the whole webpage had to reload, so they are available in the full version only.

6. Help! I've lost everything in my inbox!

Weâ€™re very sad whenever we hear this from a customer, because we know how important your e-mail data is. Our support team has done a lot of investigation into these issues, and nearly every case is due to account expiration.

Free Hotmail accounts expire if you havenâ€™t logged into Hotmail for a certain number of days, which is a standard practice for web-based mail accounts because many users use an account for a little while, and then never use it again. MSN Hotmail accounts expire after 60 days, and Windows Live Hotmail accounts expire after 120 days. Advances in our data center have allowed us to extend our expiration times, which used to be 30 days.

If you believe your e-mail was deleted in error, please contact the Hotmail Support Team directly. We are not able to offer effective support through blogs. The email address is emailspt@microsoft.com and set the subject to â€œData Loss Question.â€ There are great, real-life people there who can help you. They are the same folks who bring you the E-mail Support Space.

Hotmailâ€™s journey from MSN to Windows Live

Hi, Iâ€™m Ellie, and Iâ€™m a program manager on the Windows Live Hotmail team. A lot of you have had comments and questions about how and why we decided to make all the changes that we did in going from MSN Hotmail to Windows Live Hotmail, so I thought Iâ€™d provide a little background for you.

The Hotmail team started working on Windows Live Hotmail back in 2004, with the goal of making web-based e-mail easier, faster, and safer. Our MSN Hotmail code base was also getting pretty rickety, so we wanted to start over from scratch to create a new code base that would be easier to maintain and develop on. When we started thinking about what belongs in the new Hotmail, we focused on the core features of e-mail and analyzed how e-mail fits into the lives of our hundreds of millions of customers around the world.

Itâ€™s not possible to build something perfect the first time (or maybe not even the 10th time), so we decided to start gathering your feedback early. We launched our public beta in the spring/summer of 2005. Customer feedback was such a high priority for us that we started our public beta when we still hadnâ€™t added all the features we knew weâ€™d need.

Some of you out there in blogland are the beta testers who devoted so much of your time and energy to trying new releases and submitting feedback. With each release, we identified the biggest problems by looking at customer feedback and surveys from the previous release, fixed bugs and designed new features to address the top issues, and then used usability studies to tweak our initial designs. What comes next? Yup, more beta testing and another survey to see how much better the new release was compared with the old one. We did these iterations for about two years, until May 2007, when our data showed that Windows Live Hotmail was good enough to get out of beta. We did another release in the fall of 2007 that we have been moving our MSN Hotmail users to. We are eternally grateful to everyone who has taken the time to give constructive feedback. You have influenced what we built and which order we built the parts in. Windows Live Hotmail in 2007 is so much better than it was two years ago. And we are not done yet! Hotmail will continue to evolve for years to come â€“ we have some really cool ideas for the next year that weâ€™re just starting to plan.

With that said, Windows Live Hotmail is not perfect, and we are still planning to make changes. Change can be hard, especially when itâ€™s not a change that you, personally, may have asked for. We did get feedback from thousands of customers, but itâ€™s tough to make something that makes everyone happy.

In a few days, weâ€™ll follow up with answers to some of the most common questions weâ€™ve heard from our customers about Windows Live Hotmail.

How do YOU use Windows Live?

For the last couple of months, weâ€™ve had so many new Windows Live releases that the blog has become mostly a place for announcements, with little room to really talk about how we (and you) use Windows Live in our own lives, which is where I think it can get a lot more interesting.Â

Over the next few weeks, guest bloggers from all over the Windows Live organization will share the ways they use Windows Live, and hopefully tell you a few things you donâ€™t know yet. Weâ€™ll also try to address some of your frequently asked questions. We hope you'll respond and send us comments about ways YOU use Windows Live, cool features you've come across, and of course, how you think we could improve.

If you have ideas for how you want a specific Windows Live service to change, an even more direct way to make your point is to use the feedback form (those comments go straight to the people who decide where to go next with each product).Â And if something doesnâ€™t work the way it should, you can always get help here, or contact support, and we'll do our best to fix the problem.Â

The new Windows Live is here!

Today weâ€™ve released the next generation of Windows Live! You can get all the new products now at the new WindowsLive.com. You can install everything in one download, or pick just the products you want.

Everything coming out today is designed to work with the Windows Live services youâ€™re already using, like Windows Live Spaces, Hotmail, Messenger, and Windows Live for mobile, but of course, they add a whole slew of new features into the mix.

Todayâ€™s release includes:

Windows Live Mail â€” This desktop mail program lets you see all your e-mail accounts in one place (including Hotmail, Gmail, AOL, or any other IMAP or POP web e-mail account), and adds all kinds of features you donâ€™t normally get with web mail.
Windows Live Messenger (update) â€” The popular IM program has a new upgrade, including improved contact cards, file sharing, video calling, and VOIP capabilities.
Windows Live Writer â€” A WYSIWYG editing program for bloggers that makes it easy to add photos, maps, tags and more to your blog, and publish directly to Windows Live Spaces, Blogger, TypePad, and many other blogging services.
Windows Live Photo Gallery â€” Helps you find, organize, fix, and share your photos and videos, stitch together panoramic photos, and upload them all directly to Windows Live Spaces or Flickr.
Windows Live Toolbar (update) â€” Easy access to Live Search and Windows Live, custom buttons, and security features that help you block suspicious websites and pop-ups.
Family Safety from Windows Live OneCare â€” Tools to help you protect your children from inappropriate websites and contacts. You decide how much control you want for each child.

Where to begin?

There are too many new features in this release to describe in one blog post, so Iâ€™ve got a (somewhat random, and very incomplete) list of 10 things you can do with Windows Live, to get you started. Most of these features are brand new today; a couple of them are not entirely new, but theyâ€™re a little more polished in the new release, and I think theyâ€™re worth pointing out.

1. Get a new @live.com e-mail address

This one isnâ€™t on the list of products because you donâ€™t need to install anything, but itâ€™s definitely new, and long anticipated! Go here to create a cool new e-mail address ending in @live.com. You can access your new e-mail account via Windows Live Hotmail, Windows Live Mail, or Microsoft Office Outlook Connector.Â

2. Automatically rotate and group your photos Â

Windows Live Photo Gallery automatically figures out which photos need to be rotated and does it for you as you import them from your camera.* You can also automatically group your photos based on when they were taken, or by using tags you add.

*Auto-rotation may not work with some older models of digital camera.

3. Add maps, videos, or pictures to any blog postÂ

Spice up your blogs with pictures, maps, and videos. With Windows Live Writer you can easily format your blog entries to look the way you want them to, and add photos, videos, maps from Live Search Maps, files from Windows Live SkyDrive, and lots of other stuff.

After installing Writer, enter the web address of your blog or space.
Writer automatically detects the formatting and other settings you use on your blog, and formats your new entries to match.
Click New at the top of the Writer window.
Use the buttons in the right pane to easily insert maps, videos, and more.

4. See all your new mail at a glance

When you install Windows Live Mail on your desktop, you can manage multiple e-mail accounts in one program. To take that a step further, quick views are virtual folders that show you categories of mail from all your e-mail accounts grouped together in one place. No more switching between accounts and folders!

You can get quick views of all of your unread mail, all unread mail from your contacts, all your sent mail, all flagged mail, etc. To add the quick views you want:

In Windows Live Mail, right-click Quick views in the folder list.
Click Select quick views.
Select the quick views you want to see in your folder list.

5. Send an SMS to a mobile phone from Windows Live Mail

Sending text messages (SMS) from Windows Live Mail is a great example of how Windows Live programs work together to give you more than the sum of their parts. You can send text messages from Windows Live Mail to any contact who's set up Windows Live on their mobile phone. Look for a telephone icon next to the names of people in your contact list who have it.Â Â

To send a text message from Windows Live Mail:

Click the arrow next to New.
Click Mobile text message.
Select the person you want to send it to.
A Messenger window opens, and you can start texting as if you were on your mobile phone (only easier, because the keyboard isnâ€™t so tiny).

6. Add a voice clip to your text conversation

Text messages, voice messages, instant messages--the lines are all starting to blur. If you use Messenger on a Windows Mobile phone, now you can include voice clips in your SMS conversations.

Open Windows Live on your Windows Mobile phone, and start an SMS (text message) conversation in Messenger.
On the Menu, select Voice clip.
Click record.
When you finish recording, hit Send.
The voice clip will show up as an icon in your conversation, and your friend can click Play to hear it.

7. Make a button to add to your toolbar

You can customize your Windows Live Toolbar with buttons from Windows Live Gallery, or you can create your own. It took me about 2 minutes to create a button that shows my local traffic information, and it was kind of fun! And when you're done, you can submit your button to Windows Live Gallery so other people can use it too!

On Windows Live Toolbar, click the arrow next to the Gallery button.
Select a button from those featured on the menu, or click Make a button.
Fill out the simple form to create your own button that links to a favorite website, add a dropdown menuâ€”you can even include a specialized search function.

8. See who your kids are talking to online

If you have children, you worry about them. With Family SafetyÂ from Windows Live OneCare, you can feel better about what theyâ€™re doing online, and especially, who theyâ€™re meeting. A built-in contact approval system lets you know who your kids are talking to on Windows Live services, including IM, e-mail, or Windows Live Spaces, and you can approve or reject anyone new.Â

Family Safety also blocks specific websites or content categories that you choose for each child. If they want to see a site that youâ€™ve blocked, they can use the software to ask you for permission.

9. Make a difference with iâ€™m in Messenger

If you already use Windows Live Messenger to IM your friends, why not raise some money for a good cause at the same time? If you join the iâ€™m initiative, every time you start an IM conversation, Microsoft shares a portion of the program's advertising revenue with a social cause that you choose from our initiative partners, including great organizations like the Red Cross, UNICEF, and the Humane Society.

In November and December, Microsoft is doubling its contributions to the iâ€™m initiative. Thereâ€™s no cap on the amount Microsoft will donate to each organization, and thereâ€™s no charge to you, so you can put Microsoftâ€™s money where your mouth is.

10. Smile, and help children around the world

Windows Live is partnering with Operation Smile to get people to share their smiles and help make a difference in the lives of children around the world. To participate, go to windowslive.com/smile and share pictures of your own smiling face. Your photos might be posted on the site, or they might show up on big screen displays at Windows Live events going on in New York and Los Angeles today and tomorrow.

Whether or not you get your 15 minutes of fame, share your smiles using Windows Live. Microsoft's donation to Operation Smile is based on ad revenue from Windows Live Spaces for November and December. So, the more photos you share on Windows Live Spaces, the more money will go to Operation Smile.

As we move forward on the platform and add new documentation, capabilities, and end-user features, we want to be SURE that you are heard, and that any issues are addressed in a timely manner. The following guidelines will significantly reduce wait time for you and will make it easier for us to assist you quickly and efficiently. As weâ€™ve stated before, we want as many apps to go live as possible! This is a 2 way street, and we could not be successful without you!

The following list includes just a few posting guidelines to make things run smoother for all of us on the MySpace Development Platform. Please take these into consideration when posting.

Â· Read the BLOGS! These blogs contain great information. We post them for a reason, and many issues can be addressed by reading them.

Â· Read the FAQ. We are working on updating it, and realize some information may be out of date. In the meantime, it still has a lot of useful information.

Many major issues and fixes are posted here.

Â· Check out our IRC chatroom! We have folks that frequent IRC as well. Some may be available to answer immediate questions! http://developer.myspace.com/Community/forums/p/330/1168.aspx

Â· Search the forums before you create a new thread. Some of these issues have been addressed, and work-arounds have been posted. Creating a new thread just makes the forums more â€œBUZYâ€ and itâ€™s harder to weed through to find any NEW issues that may arise.

Â· Keep threads in their respective forums. We do have MS devs that frequent them regularly, looking for issues, addressing them and/or posting work-arounds. If your posts are all over topics that are not related to your issue, then we are delayed while finding them, and you are delayed in assisting your app to go LIVE.

Â· Do not DUPLICATE your posts across multiple forums. This does not address the issue any faster, and it makes it harder for us forum folks to weed through dupes to find other issues.

Â· If you are having a problem with a specific application, please post the APP ID or LINK. Many of you come to these forums, post, and then do not return for quite awhile. Itâ€™s hard to address specific issues; if we do not know specifically the application that is giving you trouble. Posting the application link or ID will significantly cut down your waiting time.

Â· Please keep advertising to the OFF TOPIC forums. We realize you want to promote, and thatâ€™s why we have the Brag and Boast, Meet and Greet, and Grab bag forums. Posting these things in other forums, again, makes it harder for us to track down the real issues.

You can always feel free to message us directly at if you feel youâ€™re specific has not been addressed.

Publishing App Changes

Your application changes are no longer published live immediately. This gives you the ability to iterate your app and explicitly publish changes. Many of you have created a separate development version of your app. You no longer have to do that.

As the developer of the app you always have a view into the development version of your surface. When you are confident in your changes, you must explicitly click "Publish Changes" in My Apps. Your changes will then be published to the live version and installed users after a short waiting period. You may still make changes to your app during this period and you do not have to explicitly publish those new changes at that time and the waiting period is not reset. However, we will be giving you the ability to un-publish changes that have not gone live yet in case you change your mind.

I know many of you aren't happy about a waiting period for changes to go live, no matter how short the length, but it also allows us to spot check changes. We will be experimenting with lowering the waiting period dependent on your app statistics including the length of time it has been live and it's usage, etc. Please provide us feedback; we really want to strike the right balance of developer capability and security. We believe the short waiting period until published changes go live is reasonable, but our ears are open.

Today we officially launched the Apps Gallery on MySpace! As you know, the Gallery has been out for a little more than a month, but we now have links pointing to it from various places on the site, including "Apps" links in the top menu across MySpace and on MySpace.com

Ch Changes

You've probably noticed lots of changes on MDP in the last week or so. I want to quickly highlight and explain these changes and how they fit with our ongoing plans for MDP.

"Post To" capabilities

The most significant change last week was the addition of messaging and posting functionality that we call "Post To". In brief, Post To enables your apps to provide content to users -- anything from text, to markup, to media -- and allows them to post it in a bulletin or blog, save it to their own profile, or send it to a friend in a MySpace message or comment. Here's a great blog post by Donny Mack from our Seattle team that explains this new functionality in detail: introducing Post To

We have two main goals with Post To: give MySpace users more ways to connect and express themselves, and give developers more ways to spread the word about your apps. We think these goals are directly aligned, and here's why. The best way for your apps to grow in popularity is by really engaging users and providing them with cool content that they also want their friends to see. Post To lets you do so using the tools that MySpace members are already familiar with. Now you can let your users brag about their high scores in a bulletin post or challenge a friend to beat that score in a message. But remember that MySpace is all about profiles and self-expression, so I encourage you to provide your users with cool stuff to post in their blogs and profiles or to drop in a comment . . . those are great ways for your apps to spread.

We've already gotten a lot of good questions/feedback about Post To, and we will be getting back with more specific info on questions like using Post To from the RESTful API and on the profile and UHP views. I'd like to quickly address one issue, though, which is whether we will allow messaging/posting to multiple recipients. Firstly, Post To does support MySpace bulletins, which is a great way to let users "broadcast" a message about your app. Messages, however, can only be sent to one user at a time on MySpace. We are looking at allowing multiple message recipients in the future, but need to strike a balance between convenience and flooding inboxes. We are also developing new app-specific messaging capabilities - more on that in coming weeks.

Applications Module on UHP

Have you noticed more users installing your apps? Another change last week was that the "Applications" module on Users' Home Pages now appears for ALL users. Previously, it had only appeared after a user installed an app. Here's how the module looks for users who don't have any apps:

You might not think such a small module would drive a lot of traffic, but that's the power of MySpace! We've already seen a large increase in views and installs in the gallery, and this is just another step in the increasing visibility of the Apps platform on MySpace.

Default sorts in the Apps Gallery

The final big change we made last week was that we modified the default sort/view in the Apps Gallery from most installs to most recent submissions. We did this for a couple of reasons. First, we wanted to give MySpace users more variety in the apps they see when the come to the gallery. Second, we wanted to give newer apps more exposure and opportunities, which is definitely part of our mission to ensure that MDP provides a level playing field for all developers.

We will likely be changing the default sorts frequently as we roll out new sorts and views on the gallery - some in the coming weeks! Stay tuned for continued updates.

Important REST API Code Update

We have recently rolled out an important code change that may be causing 401s in server to server requests to the REST API. Server to server requests to http://api.msappspace.com will result in a 401 now. The domain must be http://api.myspace.com. The former domain is to be used for user-agent to api requests and the latter is only for server to server OAuth signed requests.

Our own API tool has not been changed to reflect this, but will be soon.

We apologize for the invconvenience, but this was a necessary security change.

OpenSocial Hackathon: Sunday, 6th of April (in London)

For those of you wo attended the MySpace Developer Platform launch event in London, we wanted to let you know about an upcoming OpenSocial hackathon event also in London.

This Sunday, the 6th of April, come jump into some code and learn how to get OpenSocail apps up and running on MySpace and other containers. Engineers from MySpace and Google will be on hand to help walk through code examples, and help you build your applications. This is a great opportunity to get started building OpenSocial applications.

BT has graciously volunteered to host this event at BT Centre, 81 Newgate Street. London EC1A 7AJ, just across from St. Paul's tube station, and we hope to see you there

The event will start at 11am and go as long as people can still type. The event is totally free and of course, and of course there will also be sufficient quantities of beer and pizza.

Apps in Friend Subscriptions!

Things have been going very well with the Apps Gallery since we beta launched on March 13th. There are already hundreds of apps in the Gallery, with exposure to hundreds of thousands of MySpace members. We're now beginning the process of increasing exposure of the Gallery - and your apps! - to the wider MySpace community. The first step in this process is getting apps into Friend Subscriptions. If you're not familiar with Friend Subscriptions, it's a key feature on user's home pages that lets users see what their friends have been doing: posting pictures and videos, updating their profiles and blogs, and now, adding applications! Here's an example of what users see when a friend adds an application:

When a user clicks on the app name or picture, they're taken to the app profile so that they can find out more and add the app themselves if they like. This is a great way for MySpace members to discover cool new applications and for you guys to "get the word out" about your apps, and the coolest thing is you don't have to do anything: apps will start showing up automatically in users' Friend Subscriptions as they're added.

As mentioned, this is just the first of many enhancements coming down the road. We're working hard on new stuff for both "User" and "Developer" facing sides of the platform. One of the next steps will be adding communications capabilities into the container - more on that next week

Press For Your Apps!

We know there are a lot of developers out there who are eager to start conducting their own PR activities to get the word out about the applications that they are launching on MySpace. Now that we have rolled out the second phase of the application development platform, and the Application Gallery is live, we are ready to work with everyone to help them effectively time their outreach efforts.

Starting tomorrow, April 2, we will begin supporting developers with approved MySpace applications in their press release efforts. Weâ€™d like to make these announcements in an organized way to provide our developers with the best possible visibility and not flood the media with 100 press releases on the same day â€“ that just wouldnâ€™t be helpful to anyone.

If you would like to develop and distribute a joint MySpace/[Your Application or company] press release, please drop us an email at myspace@sparkpr.com. We will provide you with an approved MySpace press release template, and work with you to determine the best possible timing.

I've been trying to use Live Services a little this week and I've been struggling somewhat and it seems to mostly come down to URLs.

I've got a Silverlight app which plays some videos. I don't want the burden of hosting those videos though for either streaming or download.

So...I figure it'll be easy. I can;

Put the streamed videos onto Silverlight Streaming and stream them from there.
Put the zipped videos for download onto SkyDrive and let people download them from there.
Put the Silverlight application anywhere as it just needs to reach out to (1) and (2) above.

However, it's not so easy.

Whilst you can upload a video to Silverlight Streaming you can't so easily get a URL that links to the file you just uploaded. The URL for your video is actually quite a mangled thing and is prone to change so it's not as easy as just linking to it.

If you do host your Silverlight application on Silverlight Streaming then you can get around this because if you use the devlive:slscontrol you can use "magical" initParams values and if they contain URI's like this;

streaming:/myAccount/myFolder/myVideo.wmv

then they are translated before they hit your application by the infrastructure. Otherwise, it's pretty difficult. This is explained properly up here.

So..if I host both my application and my videos up on Silverlight Streaming then I'm ok. I can live with that :-)

However, my SkyDrive problem seems to have no solution right now. Essentially, all I want to do is upload a .zip file to SkyDrive and then get a URL for that uploaded .zip file. SkyDrive won't do this. What it does is to give you a URL to a webpage that will then let you download the .zip file. That's fine for a human in a browser but not so great if you're trying to download the .zip file from a piece of .NET code.

So, I gave up on using SkyDrive for my purposes which is a shame because "big store in the cloud" is exactly what I wanted.

For me - the upshot here is that if a user uploads a file to your service then they are very likely to want to be able to get a predictable URL to that file otherwise the value of the upload is reduced. I can appreciate that there might be good reasons for not giving the user a direct URL to their content but my view is that services are more likely to be adopted if they do.

Sparrows' tears? Perhaps. But never a teardrop on the fire...

Very non-technical, you should probably skip, yada yada yada....

I went out last night and actually managed to run into Claire (yes, the Claire from this blog) and her friend Trisha (who I had also met).

A reunion of sorts, I suppose. :-)

It was a minor celebration for them -- her 23rd birthday had not yet happened, was coming up next week and they were having a girl's night out....

She had been dying to ask me about a song, and was nearly ready to give up and to put the question in the Suggestion Box since she hadn't seen me since the first time. Lucky I was out?

The conversation went something like this:

Claire: Do you watch House?
Michael: The TV show on FOX?
Claire: Yes.
Michael: Stars Hugh Laurie, sporting a decidedly non-English accent?
Trisha: Yes. {a bit testily}
Claire: What do you know about the theme song?
Michael: Hmmmm.... an excerpt of Teardrop by Massive Attack, I think.
Trisha: {turning to Claire} He isn't human.
Claire: Did you know that it has lyrics?
Michael: Definitely. Elizabeth Fraser did the singing.
Trisha: You know who sang the song?
Michael: Of course! I fall in love with her voice every time I hear it. Which thankfully for my heart (though sadly for me ears) is not often...
Trisha: {turning to Claire} He really isn't human.
Michael: I had it on CD anyway, and I have been listening to it a bit this last week after someone had been playing it, so not too much weirdness.

Michael: Elizabeth's voice is just a memorable one. Like when she did This Love on the Cruel Intentions soundtrack. It just gets me...
Claire: What do you know about the lyrics of Teardrop?
Michael: Hmmmm. Some cool lines in it like "love is a verb" and "Teardrop on the fire" and "love is a doing word" and such. I think there was some really sad timing, like her boyfriend drowning, right around the time she put down the vocal tracks. Why?
Trisha: {turning to Claire} Inhuman, I tell you.
Claire: What about themes, and meaning in the lyrics?
Michael: On that, I'm not sure. Personally, I always thought of it as a "just after a breakup" kind of song, when someone else breaks up with you. That time when you could try, but the effect would be about as useful and noticeable as a tear drop trying to put out a fire. Which is to say, not much. Fearlessness comes up, but it is the fearlessness of emotional impotence, you know?
Claire: Anything about abortion, perhaps?
Michael: ?!?!? Huh ?!?!?
Claire: A friend of mine had seen the video, and they said it looked a bit like an abortion.
Michael: I don't think so. It was a little creepy, it was a fetus and the fetus was lip syncing some of the song's lyrics. But when the song ended everything faded to black. I don't remember it looking like an abortion.
Trisha: {turning to Claire} Why can't you be interested in a human, anyway?
Claire: Did the song mean anything to you? Did you attach it to any relationships or breakups?
Michael: {smiling} Brad and Jennifer, maybe.
Claire: No, I mean any of your relationships or breakups?
Michael: Hmmm. I don't think I ever did. The image doesn't really fit my conception of me. I mean, my efforts may be for naught, sure. They usually are. But I never really imagine them being as hard to notice as a solitary teardrop on the fire. The closest I have ever come is that whole sparrow's tears thing I mentioned, and even then I never implied lack of noticability. I only implied that it didn't make a difference.
{Claire looks thoughtful}
Michael: Which doesn't make much of a difference in the end -- knowing one notices long enough to reject? I'd almost rather have more "rejected because they didn't notice" in my life, sometimes.
Claire: I understand.
Trisha: The part she won't tell you about is that it is the song she associates with you, Since you never ended up going out with her.

It isn't like I was afraid to sit and talk with you tonight, you haven't ever managed to bore me or anything either of these times.
Trisha: {turning to Claire} I'm telling you -- he is not human. {turning to me, smiling} She broke up with him.
Claire: Ignore her, she read some of your blog and doesn't think you're for real. She thinks you have a staff writing for you.
Michael: {laughs} No, no staff. Just multiple personalities. And I don't sleep very much.
Claire: You know I'm almost a year older now?

Claire: I was afraid you were going to say that....
Michael: Well, look on the bright side. I'm not going to start calling you "little sparrow" just because of this conversation.
Trisha: Speak for yourself! She'll be "sparrow" to me, for a while at least.

We then we started talking about House for a bit, there are things I love about the show and things I hate. And how I definitely enjoy watching it, either way. They both love the show, and both think that if I were a doctor, I'd be just like Dr. House. Which is very weird since someone in MS Typography said the very same thing to me last week!

Who bells the cat when it comes to glyph substitution?

I am curious about the division of labor between Uniscribe (or any other rendering\layout engine) and the OpenType font, with regards to glyph substitution.

I've been poking around parsing the OpenType font data for Tahoma.ttf. It has a GSUB section for Arabic, with features for initial, median, and final forms. From reading the OpenType spec, I guess I would have expected the font to use contextual substitution: eg if the character before is one of X, and the current character is one of Y, replace the current character with the final form (or whatever). Instead, the font just has simple substitution tables: the 'fina' feature has a list of glyphs that are replaced by a separate list of glyphs.

Does that mean the brains is in Uniscribe? Does Uniscribe take the rules of Arabic, decide that a character is in the final position, then search out the 'final' feature to see what glyph to substitute? What is the dividing line between the responsibility of the rendering engine and the font itself?

This one is of course a little bit outside my areas of expertise, since I am much more a fan of good typography than someone who could actual create beautiful fonts for any language or script, though I'll see if I can say a few words on the subject. :-)

A lot of the logic and planning behind OpenType typography is more art than science, and there really is more than one way to do the job here. For example, looking at arabtype.volt.ttf (a file that comes with VOLT):

Let's take a look at the init, medi, fina, abeautifulnd isol tables for a moment:

Some of them are totally obvious -- like the ones that map to compatibility range glyphs that match the ones shown here.

Kind of implies that everything I said about the compatibility ranges in It Does Not Always Pay to be Compatible and Getting out of dodge (or at least out of the compatibility range!) and Getting out of the compatibility zone, redux doesn't apply to typographers, right? :-)

But if you look at these mappings carefully (and especially if you compare the glyphs here to the ones that show up in Character Map, you;ll see that sometimes the glyphs don't match because further mapping happens later.

And this gets to the heart of why you would want to avoid those compatibility range letters -- because you will miss out on any of the other additional mapping that is done as a matter of course.

Plus in the file there are optional forms for sinhi and Urdu and all kinds other information as well -- information that Uniscribe can use to decide what to do here.

To get back to AJB's original question, just because a font provides all of this information in the tables does not mean that one couldn't use another means of doing the same thing -- such as contextual substitution. Some of these other substitutions beyond the simple ones in the init, medi, and fina tables are actually contextual substitutions already, and there is no resin that one couldn't do more of that.

Though of course actual typographers can likely give better answers here, and the fact that I hope some of them will do so has just caused me to delete a whole bunch of additional screen shots and table spelunking I was doing....

Typography, in OpenType or otherwise, is as much art as science. OpenType doesn't change that as much as you might imagine....
